Vaylen Prequel: Firebrand is a talents smuggler with an entire pirate fleet at her disposal. The goods and services she provides are important to Neroshima’s organized crime (RSCI) as she helps "get the job done" on a wide range of projects. Now she's looking to hull the Fixer and take over that organization. Rolling [Smuggling] with FoRKs from [Backroom-Deals-wise] and [Rivalry-wise], 4 successes.

Human Prequel: Ari Suzuka is the NCC Chief of Spaceport Operations and is charge with enforcing the planet's strict quarantine. She doesn't bow before the Shogunate or her own corporate masters and is willing to work with the Fixer to get the job done. (The human side is also attempting to convince the NCC and Shogunate to recognize the threat through publication of research papers.) Rolling [Signals] with FoRKs from [Spaceport-wise] and [Blackmarket-wise], 2 successes.

First Maneuver

Vaylen Maneuver Disposition vs Human Maneuver Disposition
Assess (Organized Crime Faction) 33 Assess (Organized Crime Faction) 25

The Maneuver opens with...Firebrand delivering a shipment of quarantined goods to the Fixer. The Fixer digs for information on Polyxen, the Shogun’s strange new bride. Firebrand reveals that Polyxen controls an off-world fleet, but the Fixer is unsatisfied and thinks she’s withholding information. They both posture to influence each, but neither gain the upper hand.

Neroshima’s anvil detected some strange activity on the far side of the planet. Apparently someone has landed on an island there without detection by Neroshima’s hammer fleet. Takshi Hro brings this information to Ari Suzuka, NCC Chief of Spaceport Operations, and insists she take action. Takshi promises to support her with his forces if she runs into trouble.

Enroute to investigate, Takshi contacts Firebrand and commands her to attack and destroy the incoming NCC grav-sleds. While she’s not willing to take that big a risk, she does want to form a relationship with the anvil-lord. She manages to convince him that she’s too valuable – and alluring – to risk and Takshi’s warning helps her escape before the NCC forces arrive. Unbeknownst to either of them, Ian Aporo overheard their conversation from outside Firebrand’s ship with his enhanced robotic hearing.

When Ari arrives on the island, Firebrand is gone and the Fixer’s men manage to deceive their way out of further trouble. The Fixer manages to pass himself off as a common laborer, while Ian Aporo and the Twist talk with Ari. She is suspicious of Takshi as a result of this wild goose chase.

During the return trip, Takshi gives his mono-filament katana to his stentor, Frog, for cleaning. The stentor is unfamiliar with this new weapon and accidently loses a hand to it.

After her meeting with the Fixer, Firebrand tracks down Dr Cogito's spaceship and interrupts his work – creating a tank for breeding Naiven worms. She hasn’t received an order for more worms or other supplies from Dr Cogito in over a month and she wants him to make more regular orders. This is definitely a hard sell as the doctor wants to break his dependence on Firebrand. Offers of sexual companionship are wasted on Dr. Cogito, but he does agree to regular shipments if she helps him with Quandas.

While travelling back to the city, Ian Aporo uses psychology to ensure the Twist’s loyalty. This is his first step in getting out from under the Fixer’s thumb. While his mental efforts are largely successful, the Twist’s mind is not a friendly place and Ian won’t be invading his or the Fixer’s minds again!

Ari Suzuka follows up on her suspicions about Takshi and contacts the Fixer. They agree to an exchange of information – she provides the Fixer with the video of Takshi’s visit to the spaceport and he reveals the details of Takshi’s conversation with Firebrand (which he received from Ian Aporo).

The Fixer contacts Shogun Zente in an attempt to discredit Polyxen with the information he gathered from Firebrand. The Fixer’s harsh demeanor and insulting words against Polyxen quickly anger Zente and he slices the view screen in half.

Immediately thereafter, Takshi Hro was granted audience with the Shogun. He confessed his failed attempt to discredit the NCC and offered to commit seppuku. The Shogun told him to save his blade for Suzuka, who he wants to see brought low. They also discussed Takshi’s growing relationship with Firebrand. The Shogun and Polyxen approve and consider Firebrand a valuable asset.

Ian Aporo meets with the security personnel still under his command to verify their loyalty in the upcoming confrontation with the Fixer. Meanwhile, the Fixer sends a propaganda video revealing the Shogunate’s duplicity to the Neroshima media.

Dr Cogito, who feels backed into a corner by Firebrand, seeks the Fixer’s aid. The doctor is nervous and evasive at first, but the Fixer makes graphically clear what kinds of situations and secrets he’s accustomed to handling. Dr Cogito reveals that Firebrand has been supplying him with Naiven. The Fixer is confused at first and thinks Cogito is implanting them in humans. “I can get you people,” the Fixer offers, which shocks the doctor. He explains that he would never hull a fellow human and that he simply needs help with Firebrand. The Fixer agrees to look into.

Firebrand FAILURE Ari Suzuka SUCCESS

Result: [Humans successfully assessed the Organized Crime Faction (RSCI)], [No disposition gained or lost]

Sequel: The [Vaylen] were trying to [Assess] RSCI as well. Instead, the humans were able to assess RSCI for a future [Take Action] to move that faction into the human column. After Firebrand's stalemate with the Fixer, there was little else she could do to maneuver within the RSCI organization...for now.

Second Maneuver

24 April 2009

Vaylen Maneuver Disposition vs Human Maneuver Disposition
Flak 33 Take Action (Organized Crime Faction) 25

The Maneuver opens with...Ari sees Hro and his entourage walking through the spaceport. She notes that Hro's stentor, Frog, is missing a hand.

Later, Hro and Firebrand share in the ancient tea ceremony. Afterward, Firebrand secures an introduction to the head of Neroshima R&D, Quandus, from Hro. In return, Firebrand promises to help Hro humiliate Ari.

Growing suspicious of Firebrand's motives, the Fixer instructs RSCI Blockers to report any activity or information associated with Firebrand.

The Fixer meets with Ari to ask her for a favor - the use of one of the spaceport's hangars to throw a "suprise party" for Firebrand. They discuss the possible use of grav arrestors and the need to keep her Kerrn workers clear of the area. They also discuss Hro and the bad reputation he has among his own men.

Later, Ian Aporo goes to the Fixer intending to resign from RSCI. There are many threats made back and forth and there is an insinuation that Ian may not be the only android capable of psychology. The Fixer discusses the need for balance in the universe. Seeing that Ian is truly unsatisfied, he offers a compromise - Ian will become the second in command of the RSCI organization. He agrees, but reserves the right to take independent jobs as long as they don't interfere with RSCI business (DoW outcome).

Meanwhile, Firebrand's meeting with Quandus is very productive. He agrees to grant Dr Cogito access to R&D facilities in exchange for exotic sexual favors from one of Firebrand's whores. They agree that it is in both their best interests to capture Ian Aporo. Firebrand then relays the good news to a shocked Dr Cogito, informing him that he has a 1300 appointment with Quandus.

Ari meets with the Kerrn revolutionary, Torazah, who agrees to seek legal action against Hro over Frog's missing hand.

In the R&D facility, Dr Cogito manages to impress his fellow scientists with his extensive knowledge of Naiven physiology.

Through various contacts and bribes, the Fixer and Ari learn that Hro is having an affair with Firebrand.

Meanwhile, Hro presents Shogun Zente with his plans for the 431st Reconciliation Day ceremonies. This is the holiday celebrating the day the Shogunate ceded authority over Neroshima to the NCC. While intended as a day to honor the wisdom of both organizations, it has grown into a day of humiliation in the minds of many members of the Shogunate. Hro wants to use the grand ceremony as a platform to launch an attack against the NCC and for the Shogun to declare himself the rightful ruler of Neroshima. Zente is hesitant to go that far, but agrees to insult the NCC as long as Hro includes Polyxen in his planning meetings (DoW outcome).

Ari Suzuka realizes the she needs more authority and insight into NCC operations in order to accomplish her goals. She discovers that Councilman Tabernacle failed to correctly document his merger with his current wife. She will use this information to force him out and create a vacancy on the NCC council - one she intends to fill.

In order to better their odds against Firebrand, Ari, the Fixer, and Ian attempt to acquire grav arrestors to use against her shuttle at the "suprise party". Their efforts fail to yeild results.

Since Ian Aporo is now the second in command at RSCI, the Fixer puts him in charge of dealing with Firebrand. He also send the Twist and a squad of armed associates to assist. In the confrontation with Firebrand, Ian forms a connection with her and learns that she is Vaylen! He attempts to lock her mind, but fails. A firefight ensues, but it is quickly apparent that Firebrand has gained the upperhand and Ian lets her escape rather than risk capture himself.

James Leveret, Dr Cogito's ship captain, informs the doctor that the he has detected theta-radiation in the northwest sector. Astrogon realizes that this is the sign he has been waiting for and soon the mating of the moon moths will begin - an event he can't afford to miss studying.

Vaylen Character Result vs Human Character Result
Firebrand SUCCESS Ian Aporo FAILURE

Result: [Vaylen prevent the Humans from moving the Organized Crime Faction (RSCI) to the Human side], [Three points of disposition lost from Human side]

Sequel: The attempt to capture Firebrand failed and caused considerable damage to the spaceport hangar and negative publicity.

Third Maneuver

26 June 2009

Vaylen Maneuver Disposition vs Human Maneuver Disposition
Assess (Human Disposition) 33 Take Action (Organized Crime Faction) 22

The Maneuver opens with...Takshi Hro is sitting at a terminal. Frog, his Kernn Stentor, brings him tea. Frog sees that Hro is reviewing the patrol routes of the Hammer Fleet, but he does not realize the strangeness of this. Hro is the Anvil Lord of the planet and fleet routes are not his normal concern. Hro gives and order to Frog, "Get me Firebrand."

After Frog sends Firebrand his master's summons, he receives a message from Torazah. The Kernn leader wishes to meet with Frog on a legal matter.

In the RSCI board room, the Fixer has assembled all of his Blockers. As the board meeting rolls on, Ian Aporo scans them all to verify their general veracity (they never tell the whole truth, as he well knows) and, more importantly, to ensure that none of them have been taken by the worm. All of them are still human. The Fixer, who has been scouring his organization for links to Firebrand, finally find on. His Blocker in charge of Masseuse operations has discovered that two of his girls used to work for Firebrand. The Fixer orders a full report on both and mandatory Vaylen scanning for all members of the RSCI organization. He makes it clear that this is now a war...

Ari Suzuka receives a call from one of the NCC committee chairs. He is very concerned with the PR mess surrounding the firefight in the Spaceport. She manages to reassure him and convince him to back her for the open NCC Council chair.

Firebrand discovers a noble woman named Yuko who was once the nursemaid of Ari Suzuka. She reveals that Shogun Zente married a woman named Terusan many years ago. The marriage was opposed by the old Shogun, Zente's father, as Terusan's family was responsible for Reconciliation with the NCC. Zente was ordered to kill her and their child, but he secretly outcast her instead. Somehow, she hid Ari with different parents before she left Neroshima. And according to Yuko, Terusan has now returned to the planet.

After some research of her own, Firebrand reports this information to Hro. She omits the rumor that Terusan has returned and she adds that Terusan was the 10th generation of her family to bear the shame of reconciliation. By some interpretations of the ancient codes, her children will no longer bear the shame. The could mean that Ari is the legitimate heir to the Shogunate.

Using the information he's gathered from the girls, the Fixer tracks down a recreational drug distributor in Firebrand's employ. Such drugs are forbidden on Neroshima as it could be disruptive to the focused and brilliant minds behind the planet's many technological advances. The Fixer poses as an NCC worker who's throwing a big party for his friends. When the dealer lets her guard down, the Fixer's men grab her and take her to a murder house on the outskirts of the city. After a length interrogation in which the dealer rolls over on Firebrand completely, the Fixer convinces her that they are actually Shogunate Security Forces. (4 Ob on Investigative Logic, +1D linked test to future confrontation with Firebrand.)

Quandus, head of Neroshima R&D, contacts Takshi Hro. Quandus uses a new encryption algorithm that "bends" Hro's screen momentarily. The researcher wants the Anvil Lord to capture Ian Aporo. He explains what Aporo is - a robot and a psychologist. Hro agrees to capture him, let Quandus download Ian's database, and release him again to fulfill the longterm goals of the program, but only if Quandus installs a sleeper program in Aporo that will give Hro secret control of the robot if needed. (DoW result - tied at 0!)

The Fixer and Ari meet and many heated words are exchange. They blame each other for their failed attempt to capture Firebrand. Once they cool down, they agree to work together on a second attempt...as long as Ari gets credit for killing Firebrand.

The Anvil Lord's booted footsteps echo down the long hall of the temple. He passes by the banners of the 42 Legions of the Neroshima Anvil to reach the altar. "Everybody Out!" the Daiymo barks and the few priest and soldiers present quickly depart. He speaks into the control console situated on the wall just past the last banner. "I seek the council of the 43rd Legion." Above and behind Hro, a trapdoor opens in the ceiling and a silent, black figure drops to the floor. "How can I serve you?" asks Nazumi, the head Ninja Legionnaire. Hro orders him to kill Ari Suzuka and capture Ian Aporo. The consequence for failure is immediate Seppuku! (Successful Circles Ob 6 - Unique Occupation, Predisposed, Master Skills.)

Back at the Spaceport, Ari uses the base's sensors to discover Firebrand's routes in and out of Neroshima.

Through Ian's link with Firebrand, he knows what she knows about Ari's family. He reveals this information to her and she considers how she can use it to take over the NCC.

Ari and Torazah talk to Frog about an injunction against the Daiymo. After making many elaborate concessions to honor and religion, they convince the "High Stentor" to let them file the paperwork that will deprive Hro of his armor while the NCC legal department investigates workplace safety issues.

Vaylen Character Result vs Human Character Result
Firebrand SUCCESS Fixer SUCCESS

Result: [Vaylen successfully assess the Human disposition], [The Humans move the Organized Crime Faction (RSCI) to their side]

Sequel: It is clear that the internal struggles of the human's on the planet have created an opening for the Vaylen to slide into. But the Fixer's RSCI organization is now on the alert to the Vaylen threat.

Fourth Maneuver

10 July 2009

Vaylen Maneuver Disposition vs Human Maneuver Disposition
Gambit (Human Disposition) 33 Flak 24

The Maneuver opens with...two figures in translucent black stealth suits slide through the night toward the Neroshima spaceport. As they enter that bastion of security, the advanced protocols of the security system's experimental AI captures the heel of a boot in the corner of a frame of security footage. This glimpse of the nearly invisible ninjas is enough for the NCC security guards to alert Ari Suzuka. (GM Building - Failed Infiltration)

In the palace, a frightened priest enters the presence of the Daimyo, Hro Takshi. He informs the Anvil Lord that while Hro was in long, uninterruptable consultation with the Shogun, NCC lawyers arrived and executed a court order. They removed soil from beneath the temple and the Daimyo's personal Iron delivering both into the custody of the "High Stentor" in the Kerrn warrens. The priest is abruptly dismissed and quickly departs before his day gets any worse. (GM Color)

In the RSCI boardroom, the Fixer meets with two ambitious journalists...from the most favorable news outlet to the NCC. He drops in their lap one of the biggest stories of the year. Corruption and instability in the court and person of the Shogun and the heroic spaceport operations chief - Ari Suzuka - who's not afraid to take him on. The story quickly becomes the talk of Neroshima. (Fixer Building - Success Propaganda)

Ari Suzuka is meeting in her office with Ian Aporo and her right-hand Kerrn, Vuryahn, when news of the security breach reaches her. She orders a security team to report to her immediately, but it's already too late. (Ari Suzuka Color)

Nazumi and one his fellow ninjas from the hidden 43rd Legion drop from a vent in the ceiling and attack! Vuryahn charges, but is dropped by the neurotoxic darts from the second ninja's stet gun. But the ninjas have badly underestimated the skills of their opponents - Ari's stet gun is quickly at hand and she drops Nazumi. Ian was forced to surrender his firearms when he entered the spaceport, but this is no disadvantage for the skilled security robot. He stuns the second ninja with his security baton. As the bewildered ninja tries to escape, Ari puts him down.

When the ninjas recover enough to speak, Nazumi asks Ari for a blood test. She is surprised by this request, but knows what they are doing. She consents and Nazumi's small, hand-held tester flashes green. He reveals that he was sent by Hro but answers only to Zente. Nazumi assures Ari that the Shogun's ninjas are no longer a threat to her and departs. (GM Conflict - Mini-Firefight)

With Ari Suzuka's permission, Ian Aporo accesses the spaceport's security logs and acquires a playback of the ninjas' attack and subsequent conversation. This recording was then sent directly to the Shogun, the first of two "gifts" from RSCI. (Ian Building - Success Security)

A package for Shogun Zente arrives in the palace. It's a new viewscreen with a taunting message from the Fixer. Hro is also present as the package is opened and the screen automatically switches on. The smirking face of the Fixer fills the screen and Zente is quick to rebuke his impertinence and lack of decorum. The Fixer cares nothing for the opinion of the Shogun, commenting on his leadership, "You're a shithill." His target is the Daimyo, who he calls an honorable, worthy leader. The Shogun warn the RSCI boss that it is unwise to anger the most powerful man on Neroshima. The Fixer says, "You're not the most powerful man on the planet, you're talking to him."

While the Shogun initially hoped for a compromise and an alliance with RSCI, he quickly realized that would not happen and pressed instead for proof that Ari Suzuka is his daughter. While not answering directly, the Fixer does tells the Daimyo, "What does green mean?" referring to Nazumi's blood test from the security recording.

After so many accusations and much erratic behavior on the part of his lord, Takshi Hro is convinced that the Shogun and his line are no longer worthy of their position. (Fixer Conflict - Success DoW)

Later in the temple, the Daimyo encounters Space Marshall Turasuto. Hro is hoping to gain the Hammer Lord's support in regaining his Iron, but the rivalries between services runs too deep. Turasto finds great amusement in Hro's predicament and remarks, "Are you going to fight naked" and "I can't believe a stentor is giving you a hard time!" As the Space Marshall sashes away, the Daiymo mutters "wigged trollop" just loud enough to be overheard. (Hro Building - Failed Circles, Enmity)

Seeking solace and answers, Zente enters his sanctuary zen garden. He kneels on a large, carved stone in the middle of the sand. When he places his katana on his lap, the stone and Shogun drop through a secret tunnel down to the control station of the 43rd Legion. When he steps out of the alcove, Nazumi and the other ninjas bow deeply. Zente demands to see the results of Ari Suzuka's blood test. (GM Color)

Deep in the Kerrn warrens, Frog stands watch over the Daiymo's armor. He marches around it in a circle, shooing Kerrn children away from the beautiful Iron which stands like a silently sentinel upon the mound of earth that was brought from the temple. Frog's personal communicator rings and he is very happy to see the face of his master, Takshi Hro. The Daiymo says, "I want my armor back on sacred ground," but Frog insists that it is on sacred ground. The Anvil Lord's anger with the dense stentor grows, but Torazah quickly intervenes and takes the communicator from Frog. After a terse conversation Torazah tells Hro, "We want our day in court!" and shuts off the communicator. (Hro Interstitial)

In order to fight Firebrand, Ari Suzuka will need her own ship. In the NCC, the man to see about technology is Quandus, head of R&D. He's more than happy to give Ari their latest prototype for field testing as long as she promises it will see combat. (Air Interstitial)

When she receives the specs for the new ship, Ari realizes that upkeep on the vessel will be a substantial cost. She tries to move around some money and call in some favors, but actually discovers that the Spaceport is operating at a loss this month. (Ari Building - Bargaining Failed)

Firebrand seeks out Terusan, Ari's mother and Zente's wife, but the noble manages to elude the madame pirate and remain hidden. (GM Building - Failed Circles Ob 6)

Vaylen Character Result vs Human Character Result
Firebrand SUCCESS Fixer BLOCKED

Result: [The Vaylen Gambit negates the Human Flack maneuver, -3 disposition for Vaylen, -2 disposition for Humans]

Sequel: While the humans of Neroshima fight amongst themselves, Firebrand uses the information on fleet movements that Hro gave her to smuggle Naiven and hulling facilities onto one of the many uninhabited islands. The cost to the Vaylen is greater, however, as Zente's house is now in disarray.

Fifth Maneuver

8 August 2009

Vaylen Maneuver Disposition vs Human Maneuver Disposition
Take Action (Human Disposition) 30 Assess (Vaylen Disposition) 22

The Maneuver opens with...Takshi Hro in his study. He summons a lackey and hands him a data pad. The lackey's orders are to discretely deliver the device to the Fixer. (Hro Color)

Meanwhile, at the Neroshima Spaceport, Ari Suzuka unexpectedly receives a video conference from the NCC Executive Council. The eight board members (one seat is currently empty, the seat Ari is hoping to fill) inform her that Shogun Zente has added a visit to the Spaceport to his itinerary for the day. The Council is very concerned but Ari explains that she has a non-Business connection to the Shogun. One of the Council Members asks, "Could this lead to a merger with the Shogun?" The other members echo that such a marriage would be very beneficial to the NCC. Ari assures them that it is not a romantic relationship. (Zente Color)

Through the diligence of RSCI Security, brain-scanning every employee and client, the Fixer has captured a Vaylen hiding among the sheep of Neroshima. His purpose and any affiliation with Firebrand is unclear, but his usefulness to the Fixer is not in what he know but in how he thinks. The Vaylen is living in the body of a corporate business man. The Fixer tortures and skins alive the business man's wife in front of him. It produces quite the opposite reaction from what the Fixer expected - the Vaylen is almost ecstatic from feelings of terror and loss this produces in the host.

But the Fixer is persistent and creative in his work. He forces the Vaylen to take various animals as hosts in more even more creative situations, but none of these produce the result he's looking for either. He then experiments with various drugs to alter the emotional states of the human host. This yields a surprising result; drugs that suppress emotions in the host are very disturbing to the Vaylen and he is willing to cooperate if the Fixer takes him off the drugs. (Fixer Color)

Back at the Spaceport, there is a lot of activity as Ari and her staff prepare for the Shogun's visit. She has her staff hang the Reconciliation Day decorations early, a move intended to simultaneously honor and annoy Zente. (Ari Color)

Ian Aporo needs to upgrade his tactical processes - his failure at the Spaceport against Firebrand made that clear. There's only one place for him to go, so he inconspicuously enters an NCC R&D building and connects to the network. He finds the CMDX5000 software that Quandus is developing and with the help of some bribes made by the Fixer, he manages to get in and out undetected. The software proves compatible with his systems, but he doesn't detect the automatic user-data-collection subroutine... (Ian Building: successful Security, loan from Fixer, failed Resources, Gift of Kindness)

At RSCI HQ, Hro's lackey delivers the datapad and the Fixer is connected to the Daiymo off the grid. They discuss the current state of affairs and the Fixer tries to convince Hro that NCC isn't the threat - it's the Vaylen. He sends Hro what proof he has, but Anvil Lord also convinces the Fixer to promote Takshi's career and diminish the role of the NCC on Neroshima. (Hro Interstitial)

After a tour of Spaceport security - a photo-op and cover for his true purpose - Shogun Zente meets more privately with Ari Suzuka. Nazumi, who represents the keepers of the sacred bloodline, is with him and certifies that Ari is the legitimate heir. After revealing that he knows she is his daughter, he attempts to convince her to resign her NCC position and become the Space Marshal [Hammer Lord]. He promises that the current Space Marshal, Turasuto, will be no obstacle once all know that she is his heir and destined to become Shogunai. Instead, Ari convinces Zente to support her rise within the NCC. To honor her father, she agrees to train with the Hammer forces. (Zente, Conflict, DoW Outcome)

Twist, the Fixer's right-hand Kerrn, and Ian enter the Kerrn warrens to speak with Torazah. The revolutionary leader agrees to let Hro's Iron go in exchange for a meeting with the Fixer himself. (Fixer Interstitial)

That night, as Shogun Zente sleeps deeply, the beautiful Polyxen leaves his bed and takes a secret elevator down through the center of the frozen island to her laboratory beneath the ice. Firebrand and her lieutenant Geitan have already arrive by a submersible and presently enter the laboratory through the docking port. The lab is very advanced, even for Neroshima, such are the resources of the Vaylen who conquered most of humanity at it's apex. A robot eugenics assistant monitors the status of the Tako Oni tank which holds several specimens. They are playing a primitive game with the shells in their tank, oblivious to the Vaylen and the robot. On the examination table is a manta ray-like creature, a predator that occasionally attacks the Tako Oni but largely fears them.

Geitan, in a hideous multi-legged, carapaced, Vaylen creation built for combat, is impressed with the creature and thinks Polyxen can improve it for their aims. Polyxen agrees and walks over to a smooth wall that opens up to reveal a large closet-like space. Inside are two seats, one empty but the other holding another alien creation connected to a life-support system. As Polyxen sits in the empty chair, tubes and needles automatically attach themselves to her. Her eyes go vacant and close as the worm exits the host, slides along the tube connected at the back of her neck, and over to the monster. It's eyes open and blink and Polyxen takes a deep breath as the tubes on the eugenics-host disconnect. She flexes her long, delicate fingers and says in a guttural voice, "I'm ready to work". (Polyxen Color)

Reverently placing his mono-filament Katana in it's place of honor in the Takshi family shrine, Hro remembers the day he received his Daisho. On a distant planet, his father's Anvil force was repelled and he was forced to retreat to the safety of space. As the Hammer Cruiser prepared for drive space, the broken Daimyo wrote a letter to his Shogun begging forgiveness and for the care of his family. After sealing the envelop he committed ritual Sepuku just before the ship jumped for Neroshima.

Months later, when the cruiser arrived, Shogun Zente delivered the father's Daisho to the young boy, Hro, who anxiously awaited his father's return. Zente explained that Hro's father had died with honor and saved Hro and his wife from shame and humiliation. The Shogun promised Hro that if he trained hard he would someday replace his father as Zente's Daimyo. (Hro Building, Successful Resources w/ Zente's Help)

In order to test the capabilities of the CMDX5000 software, Ian Aporo uses the poor and outcast in a lower-class district to start a drug-fueled street fight. He directs the scum he's recruited to a quick and coordinated victory. (Ian Color)

When Quandus receives the recordings from the CMDX5000 software, he studies it carefully. This prototype code was not authorized for external testing and it doesn't take the scientist long to discover the unauthorized user. A reflection in a store window makes clear that the POV is Ian's. He makes haste to inform his favorite client, Takshi Hro, at the Imperial Temple. While floundering with unfamiliar ritual and protocol of the place, he does manage to convey to the Anvil Lord the nature of the software and the now increased importance of capturing Ian Aporo. In return, however, the Daimyo demands a portable Vaylen Detector. (Quandus Interstitial)

Across the island, a meeting of the NCC Executive Board is interrupted by the Fixer and his lieutenants. With all the damaging information they know he has on each of them, they quickly agree that Ari will fill the open seat on the board. He takes the security taping of the meeting with him when he leaves.

When the Fixer shows the recording of the meeting to Ari, she is unimpressed. She still wants the Fixer's help in humiliating Hro, but now the RSCI chief has a vested interest in the future of the Anvil Lord as well. He suggests a merger (marriage) of the two instead! Ari reluctantly agrees in exchange for the Fixer's help in finding her mother. (Fixer Conflict, DoW Outcome)

The next day, Ari Suzuka begins training with the Hammer. Despite some initial misteps, she manages to impress the Hammer Captains. (Ari Building, Failed Resources, Gift of Kindness)

In Takshi Hro's private chambers, Firebrand arrives to spend the day with her lover. Now wary that she may be a Vaylen, Takshi manages to play along well enough not to raise suspicion. He even agrees to help her capture Ian Aporo before their love-making begins. (Firebrand Interstitial)

Vaylen Character Result vs Human Character Result
Firebrand SUCCESS Fixer SUCCESS

Result: [Both the Vaylen Take Action and the Human Assess succeed, -5 disposition for Humans, Humans can Take Action, Gambit, etc for the rest of the phase]

Sequel: The Humans begin to organize more effectively and the Fixer's research into the Vaylen mentality is very useful to determining their motives and intent. Firebrand and Polyxen have begun research on the aquatic life of Neroshima in order to exploit it for easier infiltration of the planet. As the humans have learned, the Vaylen have a foothold and are spreading very quickly.

Sixth Maneuver

4 September 2009

Vaylen Maneuver Disposition vs Human Maneuver Disposition
Take Action (Human Disposition) 30 Pin 17

The Maneuver opens with...After their lovemaking, while Takshi believes Firebrand to be asleep, he quietly removes his father's monofilament katana from the wall above his desk. He quickly draws the blade, spins, and attacks! But Firebrand is ready for him and pulls a pistol from the pile of clothes beside the bed. The sword misses it's mark and makes a shallow cut on Firebrand's thigh, but the single blast from her pistol fells the Anvil Lord. When the Daimyo's loyal Stentor, Frog, arrives, Firebrand easily convinces him that assassins have made an attempt on Takshi Hro's life! Together they get him in his Iron where the healing foam saves Takshi from certain death. (Takshi Building, ICHSHF, foam depleted, Successful Treatment, Failed Recovery)

A sensor tech at the Neroshima Spaceport is watching news of the attack on the Daiymo when his systems alert him to the approach of an unusual vessel. It bears the transponder codes of Dr Astrogon's "Tasty Quark" but the sensor profile doesn't match. He orders Cogito to hold position and threatens to blast him with Q-beams if he comes any closer to the planet. The scientist quickly complies. In space we see that his shape is towing a large, black mass. (Astrogon Color)

At RSCI headquarters, Ian Aporo meets with with the Fixer and advises him that now is the time to attack Firebrand. Due to his Psychological connection to the Vaylen, he knows that she shot Hro and that she will return to her sled and likely pass through Airfield Plaza on her way. The Fixer agrees and sends the Twist and two Associates with Ian. (Ian Interstitial)

Meanwhile, Ari Suzuka contacts her father, Shogun Zente, about the attack. He tells her that Firebrand and Frog claimed there were assassins and that Polyxen trusts Firebrand implicitly. Zente believes them as well and tells Ari that Firebrand and Hro were very close. He further explains that it is customary for Shugonate nobles to keep mistresses and he's sure Hro wouldn't have let his relationship with Firebrand affect any Mergers he entered into in the future. (Ari Interstitial)

At about the same time, Ari receives a coded message from the Fixer claiming that he ordered the hit on Hro because the Anvil Lord didn't agree to the Fixer's plan for a Merger between Ari and Hro.

Meanwhile, the Fixer's ground car arrives at Neroshima R&D. They pick up a scientist under false pretenses, but all is quickly revealed. The Fixer wants him to, "Fire up the DB832." The man is not intimidated by the Fixer and demands adequate compensation for his involvement in this dangerous and illegal project. They reach an agreement and the ground car rolls on to the safehouse where the DB832 resides. (Fixer Color)

"Who the FUCK is Polyxen?" Ari asks the Fixer via a secure video call. "The power behind the throne," he replies. He recommends she attempt to ID Polyxen next time she's in the palace as little is known about her. (Ari Interstitial)

As Firebrand, Geitan, and one his soldiers crosses Airfield Plaza, Ian's crew opens fire on them. The Vaylen quickly take the viewing tower in the center of the plaza. While Firebrand sees this as an opportunity to capture Ian Aporo, she is outnumbered and knows to play it safe. They dig in and try to get a bead on their RSCI attackers, but Ian is ready for this tactic and leads a charge into the tower. (Ian Conflict, Firefight Part 1)

Meanwhile, Ari uses the Spaceport Signals Array to scan the black mass behind Cogito's ship. She determines that it's an inoperative vessel that has sustained major damage. She also discovers that there are traces of organic mater on board. She immediately initiates quarantine protocols. (Ari Building)

Back at the viewing tower, Ian has managed to outmaneuver his opponent and sends his men into close quarters combat. There is a lot of blood lost on both sides, but the RSCI crew prevails! Firebrand and Geitan are both down and the Twist is pretty beat up. They use a portable laser cutter to carve "VAYLEN" into Geitan's face and leave the Ksatriyen monster for dead. They quickly disappear with Firebrand in tow before the police and emergency services arrive. (Ian Conflict, Firefight Part 2)

After a long wait in the Neroshima Spaceport Quarantine Hangar, Dr Astrogon is finally granted an audience with the Chief of Spaceport Operations, Ari Suzuka. He tells her that he must speak to Quandus about his important discovery. (Astrogon Interstitial)

In the palace hospital, Takshi is visited by the Fixer. He implores the crimelord to avenge him and gives him the monofilament katana. The Fixer humors the Daimyo until he loses consciousness and then wheels him and his bed out of the hospital. (Takshi Interstitial)

Geitan is rushed into surgery at NCC General Hospital. Dr Mechiasi, the hospital administrator, attends to him personally. When he sees the brand on Geitan's face, he orders everyone except the charge nurse out. He tells her, "I'll obscure the brand, you hull everyone who's seen it." Then he gets to work. By the end of the day, all of the hospital staff and paramedics on duty are hulled. (Geitan Building)

In the RSCI safehouse, DB832 sparks to life! An abandoned robot-soldier project, deemed to risky for even Neroshima's bleeding-edge research, the last DB832 prototype was believed destroyed. But with the right people told to look the wrong way, it fell into the Fixer's possession some time ago. Now RSCI is using it as a new body for Takshi Hro. (Fixer Building, Resources Ob 6 Success)

Zente meets with his most senior advisers. They are all shocked by the attack on Hro within their own sanctuary. Since the Daimyo was nearly killed and currently missing, the Shogun appoints Colonel Tamura-Jones-Cerve to fill the position temporarily. Her first order: smash RSCI! (Zente Building, Circles Reserve)

Vaylen Character Result vs Human Character Result
Geitan SUCCESS Ari Suzuka SUCCESS

Result: [Both the Vaylen Take Action and the Human Pin succeed, -4 disposition for Humans, -6 to next Vaylen Maneuver]

Sequel: Shogun Zente is convinced by Polyxen and Geitan to oppose RSCI. Capture Firebrand leaves the Vaylen side in disarray and they waste too much time hulling the civilian medical community giving the Human side time to heal and regroup.

Seventh Maneuver

18 September 2009

Vaylen Maneuver Disposition vs Human Maneuver Disposition
PINNED! 30 Take Action (Vaylen Disposition 13

The Maneuver opens with...A calm, but purposeful Fixer calling Dr Cogito Astrogon. He was not planning to involve the scientist this deeply in RSCI's business, but they are in desperate need of a surgeon and his knowledge of Naiven can only help. The crimelord quickly explains the situation to Cogito and shows him Firebrand's unconscious form. She is badly injured from the fight in Airfield Plaza. (Fixer Interstitial)

When Cogito arrives, he quickly gets to work on Firebrand. He has so many questions for her and so much to learn from the Vaylen! Unfortunately, her wounds are too great and the host body dies. The worm chews it's way free through the left eye, and the Fixer records everything for later use. The worm is easily captured and stored in a nutrient fluid container that Dr Astrogon provides. (Astrogon Building, Failed Surgery causes Maimed result from Firefight last Maneuver to bleed out)

Three months later, Ian Aporo approaches Ari Suzuka with the video message RSCI has created. He thinks it would be better if the message was endorsed by the NCC rather than less reputable RSCI. Ari agrees, but in return she asks Ian to investigate Polyxen and her influence on Ari's father, Shogun Zente. (Ian Interstitial)

In the Kerrn Warrens, fliers plaster the sides of buildings at street level announcing a series of rallies led by Torazah. In one of these meetings we see the revolutionary leader give a stirring speech that is merely the beginning of his plan. (Torazah Color; Torazah is being played by Takshi Hro's player since that character is out of action for the rest of the phase due to a failed Recovery test after a Mortal Wound sustained during the Firefight at Airfield Plaza)

Quandus is becoming more familiar with the ways of the Shogunate as circumstances once again force him to enter the Palace grounds. For a long time he was uncertain how to proceed and was hopeful that Daimyo Takshi would reappear with Ian Aporo in tow. But over the months it became clear that this would not happen. Colonel Tamura-Jones-Cerve is Quandus' second favorite R&D tester. She doesn't push the equipment to the breaking point as frequently as Hro, but she is herself a merchant magnate and understands the priorities and value of the NCC. He shows her the telemetry data from the CMDX5000 recorded during the battle at Airfield Plaza. She's quite impressed with this information and agrees...as long as Quandus assigns Dr Astrogon as a liaison on this project. (Quandus Interstitial)

In a shady club deep within the Kerrn Warrens, Torazah meets with the Twist. RSCI's chief enforcer is usually happy to help the revolutionary improve the position of Neroshima's, but this request is strange to the straightforward Kerrn. Torazah asks the the Twist to disagree with him, openly and publicly, during one of the rallies. The politician explains that by witnessing the warrior being convinced and recruited to the cause, many others will quickly flock to the cause. (Torazah Interstitial)

In a secluded hangar at the Spaceport, the Fixer supervises a team of scientists and technicians. The twin objects of their endeavors, the DB832 prototype and the heavily-sedated Daimyo, lie next to each other with wires and tubes running between. The Fixer keeps an eye on a bank of monitors that he only dimly comprehends. But it's his money being spent to restore Takshi Hro to fighting trim and he intends to stay deeply involved. Also, he enjoys naming each component of the project; from the RX32 Burning Vengeance Kinetic Strength Motivator that will enhance Hro's limbs, to the Vigor Eternal-Organic (firmware beta 0.3.2b) advanced life-support system, and the WR32G Synaptic Enhancer that will improve Hro's aim and reflexes in combat. Unfortunately, none of the techs could solve the feedback problem within the leg subassembly, so they've decided to live with the increased EM signature. "Let them see me coming, then I'll destroy them," Hro whispered when he was informed of the defect. (Fixer Building, 3 Resources tests to add 3D to Power, Forte, and Agility, one failed resulting in 1D bonus to opponents' Signals test vs. Hro's unit in combat)

Nearby, at the entrance to the quarantine hangar, Colonel Tamura-Jones-Cerve meets with Dr Cogito Astrogon. She reminds him that she worked with him when he field tested bio-enhancements on her men. Tam shows Cogito Ian's picture and relates the details of her mission. Then she tells him how excited she is to be working with him and lets one muscular shoulder slip out from under her loose kimono. Clearly flustered, Cogito changes the subject and asks the Colonel to bring Quandus to the hangar, "He simply must see this!" She asks if she can see the ship and Cogito agrees on the condition that she tells Quandus everything. (Tam Interstitial)

At the Kerrn Public Hall, Torazah meets with many Kerrn civic leaders and revolution-minded Kerrn. He tells them that now is the time for action! Too long has Neroshima run on Kerrn labor with little reward. The Twist "disagrees" and has to be "persuaded" that a general strike is in the best interest of all Kerrn. (Torazah Building, Persuasion Ob 5 Success)

In the Temple of the Divine Machine, Ari Suzuka tries to find the secret means of contacting the 43rd Legion. Hro's heavily-medicated instructions are hard enough to follow, but her poor understanding of Shogunate protocol make things even more difficult. When it is clear that she won't complete the ritual on her own, Nazumi reveals himself, rather than allow the Shogunai-Inexorable to further humiliate herself. She comes seeking information on Polyxen and Nazumi informs her that surveillance of the Shogun's consort is forbidden by order of Zente himself. When asked if Firebrand is close to Polyxen, he reveals that he can't monitor Firebrand when she is in Polyxen's presence, which was often before her disappearance. (Ari Interstitial)

Later, in Shogun Zente's office, Polyxen convinces him to send Nazumi after the Fixer. None know where the crimelord's headquarters is located, but Nazumi has the skills to find out. (Polyxen Interstitial)

Ian Aporo contacts Mark Hansen, a respected investigative journalist, and shows him evidence of the Vaylen conspiracy. Hansen asks some tough questions about Ian's employment and the ownership of the building they're meeting in. But the physical evidence that Firebrand's handgun was used in the attack on the Daimyo and the video of Firebrand's death and the worm's exit from the corpse are enough to convince the reporter. (Ian Building, Circles Ob 3 for Exp 5 Journalism - Success)

Before Nazumi can track down the Fixer's location, the Shogunai-Inexorable calls him to her office. Ari convinces Nazumi that Polyxen is not to be trusted and that he should obey her rather than the Shogun. Thinking of nothing but protecting the sacred bloodline, he quickly agrees. According to the sacred texts the 43rd Legion protects, the Shogun cannot bear legitimate heirs with an off-worlder. (Ari Conflict, Won DoW with no compromise)

Protesters march outside the factories at the edge of the Kerrn Warrens. On the streets, Kerrn answering to RSCI keep an eye out for trouble...which is soon to come. As soon as NCC profits and productivity stats plumment, the NCC automated systems direct the Shogunate to forcibly end the strike. Projections of future losses demand and immediate and brutal response. Zente sends Colonel Tamura-Jones-Cerve to crush dissent.

When Torazah learns of this, he calls upon the Twist and Colonel Zar, an old Kerrn Offisah, to protect the striking workers and the Kerrn populace. They arrive just in time to face the two Anvil Squads Tam has brought to bear. Her intent is to scare the Kerrn back to work, not inflict damage. Her second unit's mission is to capture the Kerrn leadership; Torazah and Colonel Zar. The Twist plans to force the Anvil to flee and Colonel Zar is purely defensive in his strategy to protect the Kerrn civilians from any losses.

While the Anvil brings better armor, weapons, and training to the fight, the Kerrn know this part of Neroshima and quickly take up key positions on rooftops opposite the factories. Colonel Tamura-Jones-Cerve's second unit is quickly routed and she decides to leave the field of battle rather than risk a more destructive engagement. (Tam Conflict, Firefight conceded early due to time constraints)

Vaylen Character Result vs Human Character Result
N/A PINNED! Fixer SUCCESS

Result: [The Vaylen are pinned by -6D and don't have any skills at Exp 7. Therefore, they do not act this maneuver. The Human Take Action is incredibly successful - due to a Call-On and much Artha - and they deal a huge blow to the Vaylen disposition; -10!]

Sequel: By creating and distributing informational videos about the Vaylen, demonstrating what they can do and how to spot one, the Humans make a major blow for their cause. The endorsement of the NCC and independent review by an investigative journalist with a solid reputation goes as long way to convincing Neroshima's citizens of the truth.
